EMV Chip Technology

Argent Credit Union VISA Credit Card security enhancement

This fall, Argent Members will begin receiving new enhanced VISA Credit Cards with EMV chip technology as your “Good Thru” date matures.  These new cards will be equipped with a unique microchip that adds an additional layer of security, making it much more difficult for fraudsters to skim personal information and duplicate the card.  EMV chip technology is globally recognized by all major credit card issuers and will soon be adopted by thousands of retailers and vendors in the US.

More Secure & Easy to Use!

Your new chip card is different than our old magnetic stripe card and way more secure. Every time a chip credit card is used in-store, a unique one-time code is created that’s needed to approve that specific transaction – providing an additional layer of security.

How does it work?

If the terminal is chip card-enabled, the terminal will read the magnetic stripe and recognize it as a chip card. A message will then display, “Please insert the chip card into the terminal.” You will then be prompted to insert your card in the terminal, as the chip is authenticated and keep it there until your transaction is completed. Authenticating every user prevents someone else from using it.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will I receive my new EMV chip card?

You will automatically receive a chip card when your current credit card expires.

Is my card protected if it doesn’t have an EMV chip?

Yes. You can continue to use your current credit card, with peace of mind knowing that you’re always covered with Visa’s Zero Liability™ Policy.

What should I do if a store or merchant doesn’t accept EMV chip cards?

Your new card will feature both a chip and a magnetic stripe. If you use it with a merchant that’s not chip-enabled, your card will continue to work just as it does today as a “swipe” transaction using the magnetic stripe.

Will a chip card help prevent my card from being impacted by data breaches and other fraudulent activity?

Chip technology makes it more difficult for unauthorized users to access your card information. While there is always a risk of fraudulent activity, chip cards help reduce that risk with the extra protection provided.  As always, cardholders are covered by Visa®’s Zero Liability™ Policy against unauthorized
transactions.

Can I use my EVM chip card anywhere?

Yes, your chip card will be accepted anywhere. If the merchant has not upgraded their terminal, just follow the prompts on the terminal you use.
